Back it down to 10-12 degrees initial lead and I think you'll find the motor runs well. And it won't be fighting the starter when it gets hot. After setting cranking advance to -2 degrees (after TDC) I haven't had any problems with kickbacks and destroyed starters. In my case I think the problem was the very uneven speed of the crankshaft when cranking a high compression engine.
